What’s in a name?

LONG WHITE CLOUD is taken from the English translation of the Maori name for New Zealand, ‘Aotearoa’ - The land of the long white cloud

According to legend, it was the first name given to New Zealand by Kupe, the great Maori voyager and navigator in the 10 century. For Kupe, and as is often still the case today, the long bank of cumulus cloud settled on the distant the horizon was the first indication that land lay ahead.

It is a name that has endured down through the centuries, and is one that all New Zealanders can relate to.
